| # | Document | Type needed | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | UAN (Universal Account Number) | Soft copy (PDF) | Primary identifier required to initiate activation on the portal; available on salary slip or from employer. |
| 2 | Aadhaar card | Original | Used for Aadhaar-based OTP authentication during online activation; must be linked to the mobile number registered with UIDAI. |
| 3 | Aadhaar-linked mobile number (SIM) | Original | Receives the OTP sent by EPFO / UIDAI during Aadhaar-based verification. |
| 4 | Member's date of birth | Soft copy (PDF) | Must match EPFO records exactly; usually sourced from Aadhaar or PAN. |
| 5 | CAPTCHA / OTP from EPFO | Soft copy (PDF) | One-time password sent to the registered mobile for portal login creation. |
Original documents: Carry originals only for in-person visits — do not hand them over permanently unless explicitly required.
Open https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ in a browser. Click 'Activate UAN' on the homepage.
Enter your 12-digit UAN, Aadhaar number, name (as on Aadhaar), date of birth, and mobile number in the activation form.
Click 'Get Authorization PIN'. An OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number via UIDAI. Enter the OTP within the validity window (usually 10 minutes).
After OTP verification, create a strong password for your UAN account. The UAN is activated immediately; you can now log in to the member portal to view passbook, raise claims, and update KYC.
If Aadhaar OTP fails (e.g., Aadhaar not linked to mobile), visit the nearest EPFO district office or ask the employer HR to activate UAN and register mobile on your behalf.

EPFO District / Regional Office
Alternate offline path — assists member when OTP-based activation fails.
Manually activates UAN and registers member details after identity verification at the office.
UAN activation, claim filing, passbook view, KYC update, e-nomination.
Circulars, office locator, grievance portal, EPFO news.
Mobile-based UAN services including passbook, claim status, and KYC check.
If your employer has not seeded your Aadhaar to your UAN, the Aadhaar OTP path will fail with an error. Follow up with HR to complete KYC seeding first; it can take 24–48 hours to reflect.
The OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with UIDAI (Aadhaar), not necessarily the one on salary records. If your Aadhaar mobile is old or changed, update it at an Aadhaar enrolment centre before attempting activation.
Even minor spelling differences between your name/DOB in EPFO records and Aadhaar will block activation. Raise a correction request with your employer or at the EPFO office before retrying.
Employees who switched jobs may have two UANs generated. EPFO rules allow only one active UAN per member. Activate the latest one and merge the older UAN through the employer's portal to avoid mismatch in PF balances.
The EPFO portal can be slow during peak hours. Use Chrome or Firefox in incognito mode. Do not refresh the page after OTP submission; wait for the confirmation message before closing.
