Visit the website of the CGD company serving your city (e.g., IGL for Delhi-NCR, MGL for Mumbai, Adani Gas for Ahmedabad) and use the online coverage checker by entering your PIN code or locality name. If your area is covered and the distribution main is available, proceed. If on a waiting list, register your interest to be notified when the network is extended to your area.
Register on the CGD company's website (e.g., igl.co.in for IGL or mahanagargas.com for MGL) and fill the domestic PNG connection application form. Provide property address, applicant details, Aadhaar number, contact details, and upload scanned copies of required documents. Pay the non-refundable application / processing fee online via net banking, UPI, or debit card. Save the application reference number for tracking.
The CGD company assigns a field engineer to conduct a site survey within 7–15 working days of application. The engineer inspects the property to determine: proximity to the distribution main, feasibility of pipeline routing, kitchen ventilation, meter installation point, and internal plumbing requirements. The engineer prepares a cost estimate for installation charges specific to the property. The applicant receives the cost estimate either on the day of survey or within 3–5 working days.
Review the cost estimate from the CGD company covering meter installation charges, pipeline laying charges (if any trench-digging is needed on private property), and the refundable security deposit. Pay the total amount via the CGD company's online portal or at their customer care centre. The work order is issued after payment confirmation.
The CGD company's licensed contractor lays the service pipe from the distribution main to the property boundary, installs the gas meter at the approved meter bay location, and lays internal copper or MDPE piping to the kitchen. All work is done as per PNGRB safety regulations and IS 15818 standards. The installation work may require local civic body (municipal / gram panchayat) road-cutting permission if the distribution main is on public land; the CGD company usually handles this permission.
After installation, a CGD company engineer visits for commissioning. Gas is purged through the line, appliances are connected, and the system is tested for leaks using a soap solution and gas detector. A gas safety checklist is handed to the consumer. The meter is sealed, meter serial number is recorded, and the consumer account is activated. The first bill cycle begins from the meter commissioning date. The consumer receives a Customer ID and account login for online bill payment.

Even within a city covered by a CGD company, the distribution main (medium or low pressure network) may not have reached your specific street or building. A neighbour one lane away may have PNG while your address is on the waiting list for network extension. Always verify your exact address on the CGD company's coverage checker before paying the application fee.
If your property requires a long service pipe run or trench-digging across a private compound, the installation cost can be substantially higher than the standard rate. The site survey determines the exact charge. Get the cost estimate in writing before committing. Charges are non-negotiable once the work order is issued.
CGD companies will not install a PNG connection in a rented property without a signed NOC from the property owner authorising installation. An unregistered NOC on plain paper is sometimes accepted, but some CGD companies require it on stamp paper. If the landlord refuses to give an NOC, the connection cannot be obtained regardless of network availability.
Once a domestic PNG connection is active and gas is supplied, you are required by OMC policy to surrender your LPG cylinder connection. Retaining both a PNG connection and an active subsidised LPG cylinder connection at the same address is treated as double-benefit fraud. Surrender the LPG connection and collect the refundable security deposit from the LPG distributor.
Any modification to the internal PNG pipeline, meter, or appliance connections must be carried out by a licensed plumber empanelled with the CGD company. Unauthorised modifications void the warranty, can cause gas leaks, and attract penalties under PNGRB regulations. Contact the CGD company for any modification or appliance connection work.
